Marketing is looking for a technology journalist to join its dynamic editorial team and contribute to its industry-leading, multi-channel coverage of the marketing communications sector.

From Facebook and Twitter to Google and Apple, they will provide expertise on some of the biggest brands in the world, as well as creating content on all the important future tech trends – including 3D printing, Oculus Rift and the Internet of Things.

From day one, the Senior Reporter will be expected to know the key players, what makes a big story in the tech world and to use their initiative to instigate and create great, shareable content.

This sector forms a central plank of Marketing’s overall coverage – for that reason, this role has enormous potential for a journalist brimming with ideas across all forms of content, including video.

The Senior Reporter will be required to submit news and features for Marketing’s monthly print magazine, plus write and produce short and long-form content for the website, and play a vital role in producing daily content for its e-bulletin.

They will need to be capable of reporting live from conferences, interviewing industry leaders, commissioning opinion pieces. The role will also involve writing about other industry sectors, both breaking news and analysis.

Person Specification
Required skills and abilities include:

  • At least two years’ journalism experience
  • Preferably direct experience covering digital media and/or technology industry
  • Ability to write sharp and entertaining copy, often under severe time pressure
  • Boast a comprehensive contacts book in this area, with the ability to build on that network
  • Experience using content management systems
  • Understanding of how to promote content using social media platforms
  • Can-do attitude and willingness to work under pressure

Role Responsibility
As a Business Correspondent, you will provide expert coverage on key business issues affecting Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. This is an exciting time for the region with the recent confirmation of a three hundred million pound investment by the energy company Siemens. You will be responsible for gathering and developing your own stories, preparing and broadcasting authoritative reports as well as developing and maintaining a database of specialist contacts. You’ll keep up to date and will advise editorial and production staff on developments in your specialist area and will contribute pieces not only for TV but also Radio and online output.


The Ideal Candidate
You will be an experienced self–scheduling journalist with a firm knowledge of business and the economy. You will have a track record in breaking original stories and providing imaginative story treatments. Ideally you will have relevant TV experience and also be able to package for radio and online. Filming and editing skills would also be an advantage. A strong business and Journalism background is essential.

You will need the ability to translate business and economic issues into engaging, people-led stories for our audience. You will possess excellent communication skills coupled with the ability to build contacts with a variety of key people from the business community. You will have the confidence to make major decisions under pressure and to identify, prioritise and interpret key stories of the day.

The successful candidate will be an informed and objective journalist who can provide in-depth analysis and fresh ideas to the subject matter.

You will have a solid track record of developing new business and managing existing accounts. You will be an articulate self-starter with a proactive and creative approach. You will have the ability to negotiate deals and strive to continue the company’s impressive success.

Planning seeks a production editor to ensure the smooth and timely running of the fortnightly print magazine, weekly iPad app and associated products.

The production editor’s overarching responsibility will be to make sure pages in print and on the app are clearly, accurately and engagingly written, attractively presented and produced on time.

Tasks involved

  • Sub and layout copy for print.
  • Ensure that all copy is accurate, clear, lively and legal.
  • Ensure that he or she understands all the copy that he or she sub-edits, and if not seek clarification from the writer.
  • Be prepared to cut, rewrite, clarify, re-arrange or amplify in order to achieve copy that he or she understands.
  • Lay out pages from the template speedily and accurately, and write good, clear, ‘selling’ copy in headlines, standfirsts and captions.
  • Stripping copy from InDesign pages and formatting them for online/app publication in the content management system
  • Reformatting print edition photographs for use online
  • Manage booking and supervision of casual sub-editing staff, in conjunction with the editor or deputy editor if appropriate. Manage under-performance of any casual staff.
  • Ensure style guides and design templates are strictly adhered to.
  • Liaising with the sales team, ad production and then creating and circulating flatplan.
  • Sourcing images, resizing and sending to the repro house

Planning is the leading print and online title for the professionals who plan and manage the development of the built and natural environment. The fortnightly print magazine has a circulation of 11,700, while the website has more than 50,000 unique users per month.
 
Knowledge required

Experience of using InDesign (or similar page layout software) is essential. Familiarity with a virtual in-house printing system such as VIP will be an advantage, but key is an ability to master those systems, as well as the Haymarket Digital Photo Library system and the content management system (CMS).

Attributes required

The production editor needs to be organised, meticulous, tenacious, productive, motivated and quality-focused.
He or she must be a stickler for accuracy and detail, and work to the highest standards of grammar, accuracy and spelling.
The production editor will be expected to show an interest in the subject matter at hand, and pick up industry or specific knowledge of individuals or institutions operating in their market.
He or she will be expected to set high standards of behaviour and professionalism.

The job is a permanent part-time position, requiring the equivalent of 3.5 days per week of work (the pattern of working days is negotiable, although it must fit with the business needs of the title).

This is a fixed term role lasting between 9 - 12 months to cover maternity leave.

THE ROLE


Complex Media is looking for a Sports Editor to work in our new London office. This is a senior role and a key appointment in the development of Complex Media's UK operation.

It is an exceptional opportunity to join a young and vibrant editorial team and to help mould and shape the strategic direction of Complex Media in the UK.

You will primarily be responsible for the Sports section on the UK version of http://www.complex.com, leading the day-to-day content operation – generating content ideas and creating content in the form of news stories and features – and taking responsibility for key editorial decisions.

You have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of football, and a clear idea of how to cover it in a relevant way for the Complex UK audience.

You have a workable knowledge and understanding of other sports popular in the UK and potentially relevant to the Complex UK audience (e.g. F1, boxing), and a clear idea of how to cover them in a relevant way for the Complex UK audience.

You have a workable knowledge and understanding of the US sports currently covered by http://www.complex.com, and the ability to adapt this content for a UK audience where relevant/necessary.

You will have a solid understanding of the UK sports industry landscape and ideally some great contacts and connections within it.

Experience of leading a team a definite plus, as is an existing list of contacts with potential contributors.

You are an expert in all forms of social media and fully understand its role in the contemporary content ecosystem.

You are comfortable working with basic 'back-end' operations such as CMS, SocialFlow, etc, as well as basic handling (sourcing, tweaking, etc) of images and video.

You will be highly organised, responsible, flexible and able to encourage development in others.
