Newspapers: Online & Deputy Editor, Dods - England

Online & Deputy Editor, Civil Service World

The national magazine and website for senior civil servants is seeking an Online and Deputy Editor for an exciting launch project.

Interested in how government works? Want to get to the policy behind the politics? Find the heat of Whitehall as fascinating as the noise of Westminster? We operate at the meeting point of politics, policy and top-level management, helping our readers in the Senior Civil Service to juggle the competing demands of fast-changing political priorities, swingeing budget cuts and major organisational reforms.

Produced by the political publishing specialist Dods, Civil Service World has existed for 10 years as an independent fortnightly newspaper; it is read primarily by civil service leaders and managers. Enjoying unique and unrivalled access to top officials across government departments and agencies, CSW examines how policies, personalities and politics play out in this vast, complex and vitally important organisation. We are, in short, the trade rag for Whitehall mandarins.

We’ve just rebuilt our website, www.civilserviceworld.com,">http://www.civilserviceworld.com">www.civilserviceworld.com, much improving our news delivery platform; and in the summer we’ll be relaunching the newspaper as a glossy monthly magazine, targeted more closely at senior government leaders and packed full of interviews, features, analysis and mini-features. Now we need a skilled professional to further develop our website and act as deputy on the magazine – a job that combines responsibility for our online product development, and high-quality journalistic examination of Whitehall’s most powerful people and important agendas.

CSW’s new Online & Deputy Editor will be a highly-skilled journalist with strong web experience. They’ll be responsible for leading the development of civilserviceworld.com,">http://www.civilserviceworld.com">civilserviceworld.com, with a particular focus on expanding our news output, building web communities, leading our social media activities, and project-managing new services.

On the magazine side, they’ll need excellent research, briefing, writing, editing and production skills to commission and produce editorial content, plus a highly-organised approach and a formidable ability to turn out high-quality copy to tight deadlines. The job involves writing long interviews and investigation-based special reports as well as short news pieces and mini-features, and the successful candidate will also play an important role in CSW events – for example, by developing and chairing round tables.

The right candidate will be a senior member of a strong team within an expanding business, and have the opportunity to examine the operation of government at a crucial and unique moment in the UK’s history. A detailed knowledge of government and politics is desirable – but a demonstrable interest in the topic is essential.

The position is based at the Dods offices just off Parliament Square, Westminster. Some evening work is involved, and very occasional weekends – generally in party conference season. Salary dependent on experience, with 25 days’ holiday.
