Newspapers: Deputy head of digital editorial, Express & Star - England

We are looking for a deputy head of digital editorial to join our expanding team of digital journalists.

This role will require someone who is self-motivated, ambitious, passionate about exceeding expectations and thrives under pressure. You will need a sharp eye for news, be able to get a breaking story online within seconds and constantly be thinking about how the company website can be improved.

Working alongside the newsdesk of the country’s biggest selling evening newspaper, you’ll need to have a sharp news sense and a good eye for web design.

The successful applicant will work from the city centre office in the heart of Wolverhampton but will be expected to travel to other branches as and when required.

Starting salary will be £24,000 per annum, 25 days annual holiday per calendar year plus other benefits associated with working for the country’s biggest selling evening newspaper.

Role purpose

As a Senior Editor you will oversee the creation of innovative digital content strategy, deliver sparkling digital content and maintain the overall editorial vision for one of the UK’s leading brands.

You’ll be a highly strategic, confident, client-facing editorial expert, passionate about digital and up to speed on the latest innovations, trends and platforms. The position also involves the line management of an editorial team.

Main responsibilities

  • Strategic and editorial vision
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of the business and marketing objectives of the client and use this to conceive and execute digital content strategies
  • Demonstrate insight into audiences and propose how to reach and engage them through digital
  • Show a deep understanding of the opportunities around digital channels, including detailed knowledge of mainstream channels such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest
  • Be pro-active about emerging trends and new opportunities
  • Oversee the creation of brilliant content for distribution across web and social media platforms
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the brand, including liaising with external agencies, multiple client stakeholders and internal teams at Zone
Leadership and Management
  • Manage the brand’s editorial team to ensure that the editorial content, monitoring, writing and posting of social media posts are managed effectively
  • Ensure that your team has regular appraisals, clear objectives and a career plan to work towards and that they have the skills required to meet your client’s objectives
Essential skills required
  • Five years’ experience at a senior editorial level on digital channels
  • Detailed knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest and the opportunities presented by other digital channels
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering strategic expertise and insights for brands targeting mum/family markets through digital
  • Excellent presentational skills, with the experience and ability to sell in work to very senior clients
  • Exceptional creative and writing skills
  • Excellent project management skills, with experience of managing multiple workstreams concurrently
  • Team management experience

The deputy editor - reporting to the editorial director - is responsible primarily for the smooth running of the Drapers editorial operation.

The editorial team of 10 produces high-quality content for the Drapers website, the magazine, special reports and is heavily involved in Drapers brand extensions such as; awards, conferences and networking events.

You will also be responsible for writing news, features and opinion pieces. 

In addition, the deputy editor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day administration of the Drapers editorial operation, including budgets, holiday rotas and general HR matters.

The deputy editor also works closely with the Drapers commercial teams to improve relations with clients - and potential clients. Regular international travel to fashion trade shows is part of the role, as is attending industry events in the UK which are often in the evening.

Required Experience

The successful candidate must have a proven track record in a senior journalistic position on a magazine, newspaper or website. An in-depth knowledge of the retail fashion business is essential, as is experience in running an editorial team across print and online.

The successful candidate will be able to work on their own initiative as well as working in a team. She/he must be well presented and extremely personable, able to relate to a huge cross-section of people working in the fashion sector with an ability to work quickly, accurately and appropriately through all media is essential.

Finally, excellent man-management skills are required to help run this busy team!
