We are seeking an Advertising Sales Executive to join the Seed Publishing team. Initially working on Scratch Magazine, we hold an unrivalled position in the market place. This role will contribute towards ensuring that we maintain this position and extend our reach further.

The purpose of this role is to grow revenue for Scratch Magazine by selling print and digital advertisements to companies across the UK & overseas via the phone initially with a view to a field sales role. This includes selling advertisements into the magazine and across the group Internet sites in order to achieve monthly targets as set by the Internal Team Manager.

Business development and building up your client base is vital for this role so you'll be required to research into markets and identify potential organisations for new business. Once targeted, you’ll then liaise with the client in order to canvas new business over the phone providing relevant information about the advertisements. You’ll also be required to account manage existing clients ensuring that their existing advertising needs can be met.

You’ll have a consultative and credible approach to telesales as well as the ability to build long-term, professional relationships with clients. You’ll be confident, engaging, intuitive and driven towards growing within this role. Previous experience in a sales role is required and exposure within the media sector would be advantageous.

Reporting to the editor, the news reporter will be responsible for the daily online news and website, and will contribute to the monthly magazine ensuring the magazine maintains its high standard of topical and researched content and accuracy of relevance to its core readership. 

The main duties will be to gather and write exclusive news for the web and daily e-bulletin, and organise and write the news elements for the monthly magazine. Some feature writing will also be expected. The applicant will have a passion for online journalism, and preferably come from a business or mainstream news background.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate the ability to work to strict deadlines, accuracy and attention to detail, enthusiasm, excellent communication and organisational skills, creativity and a high standard of presentation when representing the magazine at events.

The role requires applicants to be creative, multi-skilled and flourish under pressure.  The news reporter will be involved in the commercial growth of the magazine and its website and represent the title at major meetings, press conferences, interviews and other sector events to gather news and build contacts. 

The successful candidate will be highly motivated with exceptional writing skills and take a proactive approach to the role with the ability to develop exclusive content and ideas.

Applicants will have an NCTJ (or equivalent) qualification. CMS and social media experience is essential, while data journalism experience will be viewed upon favourably. Although business reporting experience is not essential, the ability to rapidly learn about all facets of HR and establish a positive reputation in the sector is paramount to the success of the role.

This is a superb opportunity for a young, ambitious journalist with at least twelve months news reporting experience to take their next step up.

Key Accountabilities
:

 Online (hrmagazine.com)

  • Researching and writing six news stories each day for the daily bulletin, upload to the bulletin and send out each morning no later than 10am
  • Producing the most up-to-date, authoritative, topical and exclusive news possible across all platforms
  • Plan story placement and priorities
  • Updating the hrmagazine.co.uk website each day
  • Provide weekly/monthly reports on web traffic and identify the stories with the most clicks each week, giving an analysis of this to editor
  • Provide specific online data when asked by editor
  • Ensure all areas of the HR industry are covered
  • Establish and run a news diary and forward planning system, accessible to editorial team. This includes regular phone calls with key industry contacts to be established with the editor
  • Coming up with ideas and writing other material for web: short features, blogs, comments etc
  • Updating HR’s social media platforms daily (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)
  • Moderating LinkedIn and ensuring content is relevant and useful. Increase HR’s contribution to LinkedIn, including posting HR content on relevant groups, etc
  • Write a weekly news blog
  • Manage the new HR Blogs section, including sourcing, editing and uploading contributions while ensuring the HR Blogs line up is fresh and the content engaging
  • Deliver content and ideas to grow website unique visitor traffic
  • Developing ideas for other e-bulletins for the future and, if required, writing them
  • Produce content and implement ideas to help drive traffic and grow the HR Jobs website
  • Using social media to promote HR brand extensions   
  • HR magazine

  • Taking charge of and writing news-based sections of the monthly publication. This comprises: Top Story; News in Focus; Hot Topic; Campaigns; People; Have your Say; Facts and Figures; Reviews; Parting Thoughts, extended News Analysis pieces, and other content when required
  • Contributing a feature to the magazine each month
  • Running a HR campaign
  • Building and maintaining useful and relevant contacts
  • Reading HR’s competitors thoroughly
  • Developing an understanding of the magazine’s readership
  • Developing an understanding of the key issues for the sector
  • Coming up with ideas for stories and features, especially exclusive

  • Deal with PRs while being disinclined to merely re-write press releases
  • Regularly attending meetings with industry representatives
  • Attending conferences, interviews and other sector events to gather news and build contacts
  • Judging relevant awards if required
  • Liaising with the editor on which stories to cover and write, and the best way to write them
  • Meeting agreed deadlines
  • Writing in clear, comprehensible and straightforward English
  • Doing other journalistic tasks for the website and magazine at the discretion of the editor

The UGC Journalist will join a small but effective team dedicated to the growth of an online community and marketplace for user-generated video news clips. He or she will support all activity on Newsflare’s newsdesk, sourcing newsworthy video, primarily user-generated content (UGC), based on the requirements of ourclients. They will be responsible for management of the planning diary and ensuring coverage for planned events. They will have good journalistic instincts but also an understanding of the commercial requirements of a syndication business bringing with them an appreciation of the value of video news content. 

The successful applicant will be based in Newsflare’s White City offices in London. 


Responsibilities

The chosen candidate will be a key member of the video gathering capability (Referred to asNewsDesk), specific responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the Planning Diary and ensuring coverage of key events 
  • Sourcing UGC video content via social media, including verification, fact-checking and rights clearance 
  • Assisting with the sale of content to newsrooms 
  • With the Head of Newsgathering, setting editorial strategy, process improvements and new technology requirements 
Experience and personal attributes

  • University level degree in journalism and at least 1-2 year's experience of working in a professional newsroom, preferably online or broadcast.
  • An excellent knowledge of news: home, foreign, sport and entertainment 
  • Strong organisational skills required to manage a planning diary
  • Experience using various social media and video platforms as journalistic tools
  • Understanding of the importance of rigorous verification, fact-checking and rights clearance
  • An excellent writer of news copy in English
  • Hardworking and able to cope under the time pressures of a newsroom
